The First Minister's blessing

It was great to be invited to the First Minister’s office on Friday morning to receive his official blessing for Miles for Smiles. He was extremely supportive and encouraging and he said,

“Scotland has strong links with Malawi and with Zambia. The value of the 500 Miles Project to the amputees and disabled people of these nations can not be over-estimated – allowing them the chance to get mobile and live active lives as part of their communities. I hope many Scots will rise to the 500 Miles Challenge to support this work and help to strengthen our special links with Africa. The dedication and drive of those involved is inspirational and a great contribution to the global fight against inequality.”

We talked a bit about the challenges of fundraising in this climate and Mr Salmond also gave me some good tips on how to have a good, natural photo taken. I am certainly very happy to have this one in front of the Gerrard Burns saltire painting in his office!

It looks like it will be impossible for the First Minister to be there on 3 October to do the first of my 500 miles on 3 October- but I am hopeful that he will be able to complete the one mile circuit shortly before the day itself - so he’ll still be leading the way. We’ll have to wait to find out exactly how he’ll do his mile!
